Deirdre joined the LPM in February of 2009 as a high school intern from the Boston Latin School. The following is an explanation of Deirdre's LPM experience in her own words:
What was your project about?
I didn't have one project that I worked on for the entire time. I worked with Vince for a while since he was my mentor. We compared the information that was available in various databases and we looked to see whether those databases contained any information having to do with two genes linked to Warfarin. I also worked with Rimma looking at the data collected from the Turks.
What did you learn from your experience?
I think I was given the opportunity to see some of the aspects of bioinformatics. I am definitely not an expert at explaining what bioinformatics is nor am I completely certain that I do in fact know what it is. This opportunity has really taught me about working in a lab environment and working on projects with others. I was fortunate enough to sit in on some of the Palaver meetings and there were a few that I found very interesting. This internship gave me the chance to look at different scientific fields.
What are your career interests?
I'm not sure what I want to do when I "grow up" but I am almost 100% positive that I want to work in a scientific field. I am very much interested in genetic and cancer research. I think that I may want to become an oncologist.
What was your favorite part about working at the LPM lab?
My favorite part of working in the LPM lab was having the chance to feel as if the small things I was doing were important in the project. I really enjoyed working with the other interns and being in a lab environment.
